CURRENT RESEARCH: a call for men who have participated in the IDAP (UK) or Duluth (USA) programme for domestic violence to tell their story

Background to the models for your interest.......

My models have evolved as a critique of mainstream approaches to this issue which tend to frame anger difficulties as either entirely personal problems or as a gender issue of male domination.

I do aknowledge that common interventions have some benefits

  • deep breathing, counting to ten, reassuring self-talk and relaxation exercises do have a temporary, calming effect
  • reframing the way a situation is perceived is effective but only until a person experiences stress
  • expressive techniques like cushion bashing or primal screaming deliver a short-lived 'feel good' sensation
  • feminist inspired interventions (IDAP in the UK, Duluth in USA) for domestic violence focus on issues of male power and controlwhich are symptoms of anger and rage problems but not the cause.
In my opinion, these approaches have significant shortcomings. They rely on raw expression or willpower, 'do-it-yourself' cognitive techniques which may not be sustainable over time.

Probation and Prison Services interventions are based on 'a ludicrous political ideology' (Erin Pizzey at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8XM3EsGxbAg&feature=related ) and identify one cause only - male domination of women - and one solution only - challenging male domination; they ignore an individual's personal history, unique relationship dynamics, any mental health diagnosis or alcohol or substance misuse; such explanations cannot explain female on male violence or same sex violence.

Ironically, participants on these 'one-size-fits-all' programmes have felt dominated, controlled and shamed, not seen for who they are. The interventions are blind to the participant's, often multiple, traumatic life experiences which have rendered them unable to manage or process their emotions for which rage is a coping strategy.

Empathic Anger Management (EAM) is a non-gendered approach which respects an individual's unique history and experience and addresses the underlying trauma; EAM reaches the emotional parts that other anger management programmes may not reach!
